Date:  Source: New Jersey Jackals

Little Falls, NJ -- John Sterling, the iconic radio voice of the New York Yankees and Emmy Award winning host of “Yankeeography” and “Yankees Classics” series on YES Network, will visit Yogi Berra Stadium when the New Jersey Jackals play the Sussex County Miners on Thursday, July 19. Along with paying homage to "The House That Yogi Built”, the broadcasting legend will take the hill and throw the ceremonial first pitch before the Jackals take the field against their northern rival, the Sussex County Miners. Renowned for his passionate play calling style and signature phrases including “The Yankees win! Theeeeeee Yankees win!” and “It is high…it is far…it is gone!”, John has added a new home run call to his lexicon of sports oratory… the “Jackals Jack”.

Recently celebrating his 80th birthday, Sterling is synonymous with New York sports. Since joining the New York Yankees in 1989, he has never missed a game during his illustrious 28 years with the Bronx Bombers, including Spring Training and the postseason. As a result, he is renowned for being an “Iron Man” of the broadcasting booth. Joining YES Network in 2002, Sterling’s additional duties include being the play-by-play voice for Ivy League football and basketball. He has also served as a play-by-play announcer for several New Jersey Nets games on YES.

As the host of the YES Network's acclaimed Yankeeography series, Sterling has won a total of 12 Emmy Awards since 2003. He has also been honored by the New Jersey Sportswriters Association with its Radio-TV Excellence Award (1999), and was the winner of the 2001 Whitney Radio Jimmy Cannon Award. In addition, his call of a Jason Giambi home run on WCBS radio in 2002 was voted the "Best Baseball Call of the Year" in a poll conducted by MLB.com. In 2002, Sterling was also honored by the NY Air Awards for being a part of the best play-by-play team on radio.

Prior to coming to the Big Apple, Sterling called Atlanta Hawks basketball (1981-89) and Atlanta Braves (1982-87) games for TBS and WSB Radio. This run marked a return to the town where he first achieved fame, hosting a talk show on WMCS from 1971-78, and calling the Nets (1975-80, and as a fill-in, in 1997) and Islanders (1975-78) for WMCA, WVNJ, WWOR-TV and SportsChannel. Sterling also previously called Morgan State Football (eight years) and Washington Bullets basketball in 1981. In addition to his seven years at WMCA and a year at WSB in Atlanta, he has also hosted talk shows on WFAN and WABC in New York. He has not missed a broadcast of any kind since the fall of 1981.

Along with Sterling being on-hand at Yogi Berra Stadium, the WFAN Fan Van will be on site to give fun promotional items to fans in attendance. For ticket information and more, go to www.jackals.com or call 973-746-7434.
