7/11 Recap: Hatten’s Homer Leads Breaker Comeback over Shelter Island

Southampton 9, Shelter Island 7

The Southampton Breakers won their eighth game of the season defeating the Shelter Island Bucks by a final score of 9-7 at Fiske Field on Wednesday.

The Breakers would take a 1-0 lead in the top of the first on a wild pitch that scored Brian Picone (Iona) from third base. Southampton would get another run in the top of the third on an RBI groundout by new arrival Tony Zambito (Southern Connecticut State) to take a 2-0 lead.

The Bucks would tie the score in the bottom of the third. Tyler Smith (Grand View) led off the frame with a double and would come around to score on an RBI single from Mike Casaleggio (Marist). Casaleggio would score the tying run on a Jake MacKenzie (Fordham) RBI groundout.

Shelter Island would score five runs in the bottom of the fourth with the big blow coming from MacKenzie on a two-run home run to give the Bucks a 7-2 lead. The home run was MacKenzie’s fifth home run of the season.

The Breakers would cut into the Bucks lead in the top of the fifth when Zambito hit a two-run single to right field to cut the deficit to three runs.

In the top of the seventh, Southampton would load the bases with one out when Mario Camilletti (Oakland) hit an RBI single and on the same play an error resulted in another run scoring putting the Breakers behind a run.

Ryan Hatten (VMI) would step up to bat and he’d take a 1-1 pitch over the left field fence to give the Breakers a 9-7 lead on his sixth home run of the year.

The Breaker bullpen would hold the lead as Matt Petrosino (Indiana) pitched two scoreless innings while Jimmy Joyce (Hofstra) kept the Bucks in check in the ninth to get his second save of the season.

James Steindl (LIU Brooklyn) got the win for the Breakers pitching two innings of relief.

 

Long Island 2, North Fork 0

The first-place Long Island Road Warriors won their 19th game of the season behind an outstanding pitching performance by Dominic Savino (Albany). Long Island defeated the North Fork Ospreys at Greenport High School by a final score of 2-0 on Wednesday.

The Road Warriors got their pair of runs on an RBI single from Marcos Perivolaris (SUNY Cortland) in the first and a walk with the bases loaded to Matt Codispoti (Albany) in the seventh.

Savino pitched eight innings of shutout ball only allowing four hits with six strikeouts and one walk. The Albany Great Dane improved his record on the season to 2-0 for Long Island while lowering his ERA to 1.31.

Road Warriors closer Brandon LaManna (New Haven) pitched a scoreless ninth inning to get his league leading seventh save of the season.

Despite the loss for North Fork, Alex Pansini (Marist) had a quality start tossing six innings of one-run ball. Pansini struck out four Long Island hitters and walked just one batter.

Lagravinese and Road Warrior teammate Thomas Colombo (Adelphi) finished the day with three hits each.

 

Game 1: Riverhead 5, Westhampton 3

Game 2: Westhampton 7, Riverhead 6

The Riverhead Tomcats and the Westhampton Aviators split a doubleheader at Aviator Field in Westhampton on Wednesday. Both games saw dramatic late inning finishes.

Riverhead took the first game over Westhampton by a final score of 5-3. The Aviators had a 2-1 lead on the Tomcats at the end of the first inning.

Riverhead would take the lead in the third inning on an RBI single from Alex Baratta (Binghamton) and an error that scored Louis Antos (Queens).

The Aviators would tie the game at 3-3 on a sacrifice fly by catcher John Russo (Post).

Riverhead would take the lead in the top of the seventh scoring two runs on the result of a walk to Ben Jackson (East Tennessee State) with the bases loaded along with a wild pitch that scored Baratta.

Casey Aubin shut down the Aviators in the bottom of the seventh to give the Tomcats the victory in Game 1.

 

The nightcap of the doubleheader saw the Aviators take a walk-off win over the Tomcats by a final score of 7-6.

The Tomcats took the first run of the game in the top of the second inning on an RBI double from Jackson which put Riverhead up 1-0.

Westhampton would score six runs in the bottom of the third inning as they sent ten batters to the plate and had a 6-1 lead on Riverhead at the end of three.

Riverhead would chip away the Aviator lead by scoring three runs in the top of the sixth to get within two of Westhampton.

In the top of the seventh following a leadoff walk to Tyler Sanfilippo (Wagner), Eduardo Malinowski (Pennsylvania) tied the score at 6-6 on a two-run home run to left field.

But the Aviators would come away with the victory as Curtis Robison (Penn State) brought in the winning run on a sacrifice fly giving Westhampton the walk-off win.
