Top Performers From HCBL’s First Half

The Westhampton Aviators got to within two points of first-place Long Island with a 10-6 win over the Southampton Breakers on the road at Southampton High School on Tuesday.
The Aviators took the lead early on a three-run double with the bases loaded from Ethan Hajdukovic (Western Michigan) for his 12th double of the season.
Southampton would cut the Westhampton lead with a pair of runs in the bottom of the second on a bases loaded walk to Kyle LaGrutta (St. Thomas Aquinas) and a sacrifice fly by Nick Weyant (Fairfield).
Westhampton would respond in the fifth with a two-RBI single off the bat of catcher John Russo (Post) which scored David Hogarth (William & Mary) and Rob Giovanelli (New Haven) to give the Aviators a 5-2 lead.
The Breakers would take the lead in the bottom of the fifth scoring four runs in the inning. Ryan Hatten (VMI) came up to the plate with two runners on base and one out and hit a triple bringing in both runners to score putting the Breakers within a run.
Southampton would tie the score in the following at-bat as Davis Payne (Richmond) brought in Hatten to score from third on a single for Payne’s 12th RBI of the season. The Breakers would go on to load the bases and take a 6-5 lead when James Boria (Franklin Pierce) walked with two outs.
Westhampton would take the lead for good on a five-run top of the sixth inning highlighted by a two-run double by Giovanelli which put the Aviators ahead.
Nick Cantone (Marist) who came on in relief for the Aviators in the fifth threw 4.1 innings of shutout ball to earn his first win of the season. The Mahwah, NJ native did not allow a hit in his second relief outing for Charlie Barbieri’s team.
Hajdukovic’s three-run double in the first marked the fifth time in the last six games that the Illinois native has had a double for Westhampton. The Western Michigan Bronco now has a total of 20 RBI for the Aviators this season.
Westhampton (17-12) will play the Riverhead Tomcats in a doubleheader at Aviator Field at Westhampton Beach Elementary School on Wednesday at 2 PM.
Southampton (7-21-1) will also be in action on Wednesday when they travel to play the Shelter Island Bucks at Fiske Field in Shelter Island.
