The 4th Annual HCBL Home Run Derby at Baseball Heaven in Yaphank saw a lot of excitement from several of the competitors in the Derby.

Ultimately it was Ben Terwilliger (Maine) of the North Fork Ospreys who became the 4th HCBL Home Run Derby Champion defeating Westhampton’s Curtis Robison (Penn State) in the finals.

The Quarterfinal round saw a three-way tie at seven home runs between Southampton’s Daniel Alfonzo (Adelphi), Robison and HCBL Home Run leader Alex Volpi (Holy Cross) of Shelter Island.

Terwilliger hit a total of six home runs in the quarterfinal round with a string of five consecutive home runs while down to his last out. Terwilliger found himself tied with Westhampton’s Ryan Steckline (Monmouth) for the last spot in the semifinal round which Terwilliger took winning a tiebreaker over Steckline 2-0.

Due to time constraints, the semifinal and final round gave the remaining contestants a total of four outs to play with. Terwilliger and Robison would be the only ones to finish the semifinal round with home runs and a result both advanced to the final round.

Terwilliger beat Robison in the finals by a score of 1-0 to take the title. It ended Westhampton’s streak of two straight Aviators with the Home Run Derby title after Aaron Ping (San Francisco) and Cam Climo (UMass Lowell) won it in 2016 and 2017 respectively.

Terwilliger is the second HCBL’er from the America East Conference to win the Home Run Derby award, Hunter Dolshun (UMBC) of Riverhead won the inaugural championship back in 2015.
