Boon, Roberts Lead Blazers Past Jokers to Berth in 2018 VSLL Championships

It was another night of VSLL lacrosse in Esquimalt on Thursday night, with another star-studded crowd enjoying free fast-paced lacrosse action. Attendance was somewhere just below 400 people, and among the rich and famous celebs in the stands was former ‘Celebrity Apprentice’ TV star, and film star in over 150 films including ‘Piranha 3DD’, Gary Busey.

When asked if he’s here filming the next big blockbuster, Gary said, “I’m actually in town on a cruise – it’s a beautiful place here.” Gary crouched down to gather some dirt into his hand, quickly pouring it into the breast pocket of his shirt. “I love the birds. They’re so beautiful. Even better to come to town during lacrosse season and catch a Blazers game,” he added, still crouching, gently petting a caterpillar. “I’m proud of these boys, and can’t wait to see them back in the championships.”

The friendly neighbourhood Victoria Blazers led for most of the game, driven by dominant play from Blazers veteran and former VSLL MVP Cody Boon (5G 2A). VSLL scoring champion Aaron Roberts was also a big part of the winning effort (1G 4A), as well as star playmaker and assistant captain Julian Spence (2G 3A). Rounding out the scoring for the good guys was veteran sniper Adam West-Patrick (1G 2A), faceoff specialist and star two-way player Chris McAulay (1G 2A), rookie Lower Mainland import Nick Arthur (1G 2A), and veterans Jeremy Bell (1A) and Trenton Douglas (1A). Bryan Reeve, Lorne Sam, Vinny Sam, Zack Smith,  and Nick Falkiner helped VSLL top goaltender Rob Wood secure the defensive end preserving the win.

2) Julian Spence (2G 3A)
3) Aaron Roberts (1G, 4A)

With the win, the Blazers have advanced to the 2018 VSLL championship! Their next games will be 7:30 pm on Thursday July 5 and Tuesday July 10 at Archie Browning Arena in Esquimalt. They’re not sure who they will face though, as the Jokers and Tugmen face off Tuesday to earn one more chance to knock off the Blazers. Admission is free, so come check it out. Brown bagging adult beverages is your choice and not at all our responsibility.
