CCBC Wrap Up- Okanagan College 2018 Champions

It was a busy 24 hours to end the CCBC Championships.  At the completion of the round robin tournament, a three way tie between TRU, VIU, and OC set up a play in game.  After the tie breaking rules were applied, TRU came out at the # 2 seed, while VIU and OC would have to play off for the final # 3 seed.

OC's Jesse Poniewozik threw a complete game holding the Mariners to 4 runs in a mercy rule shortened game that had the Coyotes win 17-4.  The Coyotes scored 3 in the first, 1 in the second and 10 in the 3rd and 2 in the 4th to cruise to the play in game victory.  

Semi Final- # 2 Thompson Rivers University vs # 3 Okanagan College

Chris Wyslobocki for OC would throw 5.1 innings surrendering 1 run before turning the ball over to the Coyotes bullpen that would hold the TRU Wolfpack to only 1 more run as the Coyotes topped the Wolfpack 5-2.  Tyler Hodder started for TRU and would go 7+ innings before making way for relieve Dillon Ferguson.  At the plate the Coyotes were led by catcher Sean Robbins who went 3-5.  Brandon Graham would also hit a homerun for the Coyotes in the top of the 9th.  For the Wolfpack they were led by Adam Filmon who drove in one of the 2 rbi provides by the TRU offense.  

Final- # 1 University of Fraser Valley vs # 3 Okanagan College

UFV came out of the round robin 5-0 and took an early lead in the 3rd inning against the Coyotes in a back and forth exciting finale to the CCBC season.  Riley Enns started for the Cascades while Aiden Mordcai countered for the Coyotes.  Both pitchers threw well but fell victim to some errors on both sides.  OC would score 1 in the 2nd before giving up 4 in the bottom of the 3rd.  The Coyotes responded in the top of the 4th courtesy of a 2 run homerun by catcher Sean Robbins.  However the Cascades would answer with a single run in the bottom of the frame.  In the top of the 5th the Coyotes would pull ahead by scoring 4 runs, Sean Robbins and Jake Fischer would each drive in a pair in that frame.  The Cascades answered right back in the bottom of the 6th scoring 2,  Matt Legg hit a sac fly to score Cascades shortstop Collin Kellington and then Brody Vogel his a double to score Riley Jepson.    Both teams would score a single run in the 7th before the Coyotes would pull ahead with 2 in the top of the 8th courtesy of Coyotes first basemen Jake Fischer who hit a one out double to score Trevor Mlait and pinch runner Alex Russell.  Russell replaced designated hitter Jared Frew who was intentionally walked.

This set up for an exciting bottom of the 9th.  Josh Beranbaum led off the inning with a walk before Collin Kellington singled followed by a RIley Jepson single.   Kellington was throw out at third base trying to advance but not before the Cascades picked up a run.  Dan Rogers then struck out for the second out of the inning.  Matt Legg was then hit by a pitch to load the bases with 2 out, tying run at 3rd, winning run at second.  The Cascades Brody Vogel would pop out to the Coyotes 2nd basemen Erick Junnola to seal the victory for Okanagan College.  Wyatt Hummel picked up the win in the finale.

This is Okanagan College's first CCBC National championship in their 10th year as a program.
