OHA JUNIOR B PLAYER OF THE YEAR – Jack Scanlan, Stratford Warriors (GOJHL)
Jack Scanlan (Penetanguishene, Ontario) has played five seasons in the OHA, the past three with the Stratford in the GOJHL. Scanlan was the captain of the Stratford Warriors for the past two seasons, leading them in scoring both years. In 2017-18 the 5’10” 200 pound forward had his best offensive season, leading the GOJHL Midwestern Conference with 90 points after scoring 30 goals and adding 60 assists. Scanlan finished second in the GOJHL scoring race, just 3 points behind Caledonia’s Jesse Barwell.
Scanlan added to his hockey hardware collection this past season after being named the GOJHL’s Midwestern Conference Most Valuable Player and being named a 2018 GOJHL Midwestern Conference 1st Team All-Star. He was also a Finalist for the Leroy Jamieson Award for Most Outstanding Contributions to one team.
Scanlan played his minor hockey with the North Central Predators AAA organization before starting his Junior career with the Penetang Kings in Jr. C in 2013-14, scoring 95 points in 54 regular season and playoff games. After one season in the OJHL with the Whitby Fury and Lindsay Muskies, Scanlan joined the Stratford Cullitons (now Warriors) in 2015-16 and found his new home away from home. In his three seasons in Stratford, Scanlan accumulated 245 points in 183 regular season and playoff games.
As good as he has been on the ice; Scanlan has been equally impressive away from the rink. A full-time student at the University of Waterloo studying Health Sciences, he has been able to maintain a 76% average while balancing school, hockey and community. Even with an already busy schedule with Junior hockey and University, Scanlan made it a priority to immerse himself in the community and gain valuable experience volunteering with the Stratford Boys & Girls Club, House of Blessing Hockey for Hunger Program, Salvation Army Kettle Program, Stratford Community Living program and serving as the team spokesperson for a Program to eliminate Violence against Women (VAW).
With his Junior hockey career now complete Jack Scanlan has left his mark on the Warriors and the community of Stratford and he hopes to continue his education towards a PhD in Physiotherapy. He will undoubtedly be remembered in Stratford as a quality person that gave as much to the community as he did on the ice as a player.
