Team HNO Win Consolation Gold at the 2018 OHL Gold Cup

Kitchener, Ont. – Team HNO battled to a well-deserved 4-3 Consolation Gold win that went to a shootout over Team ALLIANCE Sunday morning at the 2018 OHL Gold Cup at Activa Sportsplex in Kitchener, Ontario.

Michael Stubbs gave Team HNO an early lead on the power play, from Sahil Panwar, Nikolas Campbell.

Team ALLIANCE took advantage of the power play with two quick goals by Matthew Maggio the first from Brendan Mairs, Nathan Small and the second from Brendan Mairs, Sheldon Serraglio.

Ryan Beck tied it back up for Team HNO from Nicholas Degrazia, Jacob Perreault.

Then halfway through the second, Colby Ambrosio took over the lead for Team HNO from Kyle Aucoin.

Just a few minutes later, Matthew Maggio got his third of the game from Joseph Serpa to tie it back up for Team ALLIANCE and send them to overtime!

Holding out through overtime, goalie Erik Vanska held strong through the last of five shooters to give Team HNO the win.

Players of the game were Matthew Maggio for Team ALLIANCE and Erik Vanska for Team HNO.

The OHL Gold Cup is an annual showcase event featuring top under-16 talent in Ontario. As part of the Hockey Canada Program of Excellence (POE), players competing at the OHL Gold Cup have an opportunity to be evaluated for invitation to the national under-17 development camp, where Hockey Canada gathers the top talent from across the country to introduce players to the national team program and provide a foundation of development as they progress through the POE.
