College Baseball Recap: April 9-15

Date:  Source: Florida Collegiate Summer League

The Embry-Riddle Eagles received an offensive spark from a trio of former Florida League players last week. Former Squeeze infielder Kyle Marsh reached base safely eleven times, while scoring five times and driving in four. Kyle Guttveg, who played for Winter Park last summer, tallied seven hits and six walks of his own. He hit a home run, scored five times, drove in six and added two steals to his ledger. Catcher Luis Olivier, another former Diamond Dawg, earned Sunshine State Conference Player of the Week honors with his 8-18, 4 HR, 6 R, 10 RBI performance.

Tyler Keysor showed why he is one of the top draft prospects in the JUCO ranks in his outing against Keiser University last week. The sophomore right-hander allowed only one hit in his seven innings of work. No runs scored, no batters were walked, and he struck out a season-high 14 batters. The former Winter Park Diamond Dawg has a sterling 2.22 ERA for Eastern Florida State in 56.2 innings of work, with 65 strikeouts against 10 walks on the year.

Infielder Tanner May helped the Central Florida Patriots to a 5-0 record on the week. May hit .389 (7-18), including a double, five home runs and eleven RBI. He launched his first dinger on Wednesday and added a run and three RBI. His big game came on Friday, when he went 3-4 with three home runs against Daytona State. He then capped off his big week with his fifth longball on Sunday vs. FSCJ. May, who played for the Scorpions last summer and is headed to Leesburg in 2018, is transferring to UNF in the fall.

One of the best baseball teams in Florida resides in Miami, and it's not the Marlins or the 'Canes. The St. Thomas Bobcats currently stand with a record of 42-4 at the NAIA level. During this week's destruction of opposing teams, Elih Marrero ('17 Sanford) picked up ten hits, including three doubles and a bomb, while driving in eleven. Randy Oliva ('16 Altamonte) chipped in six hits, five runs and six RBI of his own. Sergio Lopez ('16-17 Sanford) also got in on the action, collecting seven hits, nine runs and six RBI. St. Thomas, currently ranked #3 in NAIA, will clash with #2 Southeastern (47-3) in a three-game set this weekend in Lakeland.

Spencer Yankle continued his strong season for the Dyersburg State Eagles. The sophomore catcher picked up eight hits in fifteen at-bats, good for a .533 average on the week. Five of those hits went for extra bases, including three doubles and two dingers. He scored five times and drove in eleven more. Yankle, who is transferring to Winthrop next season, has a season slash line of .343/.404/.582 and has scored 40 runs while driving in 40 more. He will play for the DeLand Suns this summer.

We'd also like to send a shoutout to Dany Rodriguez of Reinhardt University. During this week's games, the junior shortstop became the Eagles' All-Time hit leader, picking up the 232nd base knock of his career. Rodriguez was a member of the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs last summer ... where he led the Florida League in hits with 42.
