Prospect Team Ties One, Drops One in North Carolina
Date: Jul 17, 2018
The schedule for the 15th season of Florida League baseball is now official.
Six teams will compete throughout the summer in five different Central Florida communities, bringing exciting baseball action to residents of DeLand, Leesburg, Sanford, Winter Garden and Winter Park.
The fun begins in Sanford on May 31st when the defending champion Sanford River Rats face off against the Winter Park Diamond Dawgs in a rematch of last year’s final game. Opening Day in Sanford has become one of the top sporting events in Central Florida over the past few summers, drawing crowds of more than 1,500. Keeping with tradition, Opening Day will fall on a Thirsty Thursday, meaning all of our fans who are 21 or older can enjoy $2 20oz Yuengling drafts!
Friday June 1 will mark the first full slate of games as Leesburg, Winter Park and Seminole will play host. On Saturday June 2, DeLand and Winter Garden will have their first home game of the season. Each team is scheduled to play 45 regular season games, with either 22 or 23 of those games played at home.
The All-Star Game will be held on Saturday, July 7th in Sanford, featuring the top players in the league. Before the summer showcase, fans will enjoy the annual home run derby, featuring eight of the top power hitters in the league. Later in the month, the top 25 prop prospects (as voted by league coaches and staff) will travel to North Carolina to play against other summer league prospect teams in front of dozens of MLB scouts at the annual Southeast Prospect Showcase. The Florida League went 2-0 last year, defeating the top players from the Sunbelt and Ripken Leagues.
The playoff format will have a few adjustments for the 2018 season. The #5 seed will still play the #4 seed in a single-game matchup, falling on Monday July 30 this year. Beginning on July 31, there will be two best-of-three series, featuring the #1 seed vs. the play-in winner and the #2 seed vs. the #3 seed. Then, for the first time in league history, the championship will be determined by a final three-game series instead of a single game. The Championship Series will begin on Saturday August 4th. It will be the first time since 2004 that the championship will be played in Central Florida.
