Roanoke's Eric Witzel named Warrior Player of the Week

HUNTERSVILLE, NC (February 13, 2018) - The Southern Professional Hockey League (SPHL) today announced Eric Witzel of the Roanoke Rail Yard Dawgs is the Warrior Player of the Week for February 5-11.

Witzel scored five goals, including two with the man advantage and one shorthanded, added two assists and was +4 as the Rail Yard Dawgs went 3-0 for the week to extend their franchise-best win streak to four games.

On Thursday, the Cumberland, ON native scored one goal and assisted on another as Roanoke went to Fayetteville and defeated the Marksmen 5-2. In the finale of a home-and-home series Friday, Witzel scored twice, including a spectacular shorthanded goal, as the Dawgs rallied from 3-1 deficit to down Fayetteville 5-3. Witzel closed out the weekend with a two-goal, one-assist outing as Roanoke beat Knoxville 5-1 on Saturday.

Signed on January 5, Witzel has 10 points in 13 games (7g, 3a) since joining the Rail Yard Dawgs. Witzel began the season with Peoria, scoring twice in five games. After being released, Witzel signed with the FHL’s Cornwall Nationals, where he had eight goals and nine assists in 11 games played.
