CSUN clinches playoff spot

ANAHEIM, Calif.- Cal State Northridge became the second team to clinch a playoff spot Sunday with a 22-1 victory over Chapman.

     Levi Bolls and Quentin Abaya each recorded hat tricks while Eli Berengut, John Blascoe and Tom Dobrokhot each added two goals.

     After Berengut opened the scoring at 15:48 of the first period Jacob Steinfeld doubled the CSUN lead. Will Lesik and Matt Bushton scored exactly one minute apart to make it 4-0. One minute and four seconds later at 8:13 Blascoe scored his first goal. Berengut scored his second goal 33 seconds after that. Alex Reints made it 7-0 just 13 seconds later. Garrett Heftye increased the lead at 1:20.

     John Michael Laurin scored CSUN's ninth goal 41 seconds into the second. Max Goen, Bolls and George Reznikov made it 12-0. Chapman's goal came at 7:52 when Jake Grief deflected in a Cole Rubin centering feed. Blascoe answered at 4:47 then Abaya scored back-to-back goals to make it 15-1 at the end of the period.

     Alex Marbach scored 31 seconds into the third to increase the lead to 16-1. Abaya then scored his hat trick goal at 11:42. Dobrokhot scored his first goal at 9:57. The Matadors got back-to-back power play goals from Mason Yuen and Dobrokhot to make it 20-1. Bolls scored the final two goals to earn his hat trick.

     CSUN trails San Diego State for first place by three points with a crucial game between the two rivals on tap Sunday at the Simi Valley Iceoplex.
