2018 Valley Baseball League Schedule (Click "View All")
The Valley Baseball League has announced its 2018 regular season schedule.
The season will open on June 1st, with defending champion Charlottesville traveling to Staunton, and North finalist Strasburg visiting Winchester. Both are rematches of 2017 playoff encounters.
Opening night will also feature Waynesboro at Covington, Front Royal at Purcellville, and Woodstock at New Market. The Harrisonburg Turks open on June 2nd at Staunton.
For the second straight year, the schedule was designed with the help of Dr. Ben Grannan, Assistant Professor of Business Analytics at Furman University (formerly a professor at VMI).
Grannan’s computerized schedule optimizer limits the number of consecutive home or away games for each team (given each facility’s availability), avoids the longest bus trips on consecutive evenings, and spaces out home/away splits and off days throughout the season.
The schedule also ensures that 98% of games on Friday/Saturdays and the final several days of the regular season are against divisional opponents, putting key rivalries on prime dates and boosting late-season playoff races.
Techniques from Prescriptive Analytics were used to rapidly generate a high quality schedule that supports the nuances of a baseball season. Using computers and analytics, a solution can be generated in a fraction of the time as compared to a manual scheduling process.
The 2018 VBL All-Star Game will again be held at James Madison University’s Veterans Memorial Park, on Sunday, July 8. The regular season is set to conclude on July 26.
