Hockey Season Kick Off Aids Hockey Club Impacted By Hurricane

The Grundy Senators Ice Hockey organization held its annual season kick off celebration Saturday with a conscious effort to aid a club impacted by Hurricane Harvey.

The all-day event is an annual affair that kicked off the hockey season for teams that use the Grundy Ice Rink as a home. In addition to the regular festivities of a DJ, vendors, food trucks and raffle baskets, the Grundy Senators also hosted a 50/50 competition to benefit a Houston based hockey club which was impacted by Harvey.

“We’re youth hockey, and we know that there are going to be families in Houston displaced by the storm,” Jenn Sabatini, the president of the Grundy Senators hockey club, explained.

Hockey is a close-knit community, Tiffany Doyle said. That closeness means that even over hundred of miles, hockey families will stick together.

“It’s a fun day to get the season started,” explained Sabatini.

In addition to the vendors, food trucks, raffle baskets and 50/50, 12 youth teams played games in the arena. The opening day festivities have been going on for at least 10 years, according to Sabatini.

The regular hockey season for the Delaware Valley Hockey League began over the weekend andruns from the second Saturday in September through the end of February. The playoffs take place in March.

In all, club officials noted roughly 300 people coming through the Grundy Arena to take part in the day’s festivities.
