Strasburg pitcher Zachary Peek and Front Royal outfielder Dominic Canzone are the consensus top future stars, as several organizations have released their 2017 Top Prospects lists for the Valley League.

Baseball America listed Winthrop hurler Peek #1 and Ohio State outfield Canzone #2. Perfect Game had Canzone as the top prospect, one spot ahead of Peek.

Other players who made both top-10 lists included Charlottesville’s Vinne Pasquantino and Michael Wielansky, Purcellville pitcher Thomas Sutera, and Strasburg slugger Brandon Quaranta.

D1baseball.com also posted an extensive rundown (article behind paywall) of some of the league’s players who attended the Southern Collegiate Showcase in North Carolina.

On Peek, D1baseball.com wrote: “Perhaps the two most intriguing pitching prospects of the weekend worked in the first three innings of Sunday morning’s game against the Ripken League. Zach Peek, a 6-foot-3, 196-pound rising sophomore at Winthrop, worked at 92-94 mph and showed a quality 77-81 three-quarters breaking ball with good depth during his perfect inning of work. He has the athletic frame and exciting stuff to become a legit frontline starter for the Eagles over the next two years, and he could blossom into a high-round pick in 2019.”

On Canzone, Baseball America wrote: “Canzone’s summer with Front Royal built on the success he achieved during the spring at Ohio State. He led the Buckeyes with a .343 average as a freshman while playing an errorless outfield and adding seven assists. He hit to a lofty .404/.457/.544 for Front Royal with 11 walks and just seven strikeouts in 114 at-bats while stealing 17 bases in 20 attempts. He again committed no errors on defense. Power may come as the 6-foot-1, 185-pound outfielder develops physically.”
