MURPHY EXTENDS SEASON IN CAPE

Published By: David Peck

FALMOUTH, MASS. – After winning its last seven games of the NECBL season, the Newport Gulls’ 2017 campaign unfortunately came to an end one week ago. Though there was no August baseball for the Gulls, Newport’s reliever Matt Murphy extended his summer joining the Falmouth Commodores of the Cape Cod Baseball League for their postseason play.

The Commodores saw their season come to an end on Monday night when they lost to the Wareham Gatemen in Game Two of the Western Division Semi-Finals to finish with an overall record of 24-21-1. Murphy appeared in one game for Falmouth which came on August 3 versus the Hyannis Harbor Hawks. In his outing, the University of Rhode Island righty threw one inning giving up zero runs and one hit while striking out two.

Murphy, who this year concluded his second straight season with the Gulls, finished his NECBL year giving up just three earned runs with a 1.72 ERA in 15.2 innings while striking out eighteen batters. As a Wakefield, Rhode Island native, Murphy was elected to be Newport’s NECBL All-Star fan vote, eventually finishing second in the poll. He will begin his senior year at the University of Rhode Island at the end of August.
