Southampton’s Tubbs Named HCBL Pitcher of the Year

Date:  Source: Hamptons Collegiate Baseball League

In a crowded field of talented pitching during the 2017 HCBL season, one pitcher stood out from the pack. Evan Tubbs (St. Edwards) of the Southampton Breakers was named as the 2017 HCBL Pitcher of the Year. Tubbs with two first place votes beat out Long Island’s Tim Kennedy (New Haven) to take the award.

Tubbs pitched in 11 games for the Breakers while starting in six of them during the season. Tubbs was the top pitcher of Rob Cafiero’s staff going 5-1 for Southampton. Tubbs would lead the HCBL in ERA at 1.53 on the year.

The native of Austin, Texas struck out 29 batters while allowing just 16 walks. Tubbs only allowed a total of eight runs during the regular season.

In mid-season, Tubbs was selected to the HCBL South All-Star roster. Tubbs would not disappoint in his All-Star outing throwing a scoreless inning of work.

Right behind Kennedy for third place was his Road Warrior Teammate Ray Weber (Albany). North Fork’s Andrew Ciocia (Jacksonville) and Riverhead’s Kyle Martin (Fordham) rounded out the top five.

Tubbs becomes the fifth Southampton Breaker to be named HCBL Pitcher of the Year. The most recent Breaker to win the award prior to Tubbs was Tim Ingram (SUNY Old Westbury) during the Breakers 2014 HCBL championship season. Mike Mandarino (Broward), Chris Phelan (Farmingdale State) and Paul Paez (Rio Hondo JC) made it three straight for the Breakers with the award between 2010-2012.
