The Cornwall Colts have traded their leading scorer.
Nick Lalonde, who led the team in scoring last season with 32 goals and 41 assists in 55 games, has been traded to the Ottawa Junior Senators.
In return, the Colts get Cameron Hebert and Zachary Cross.
Hebert, from St. Andrews West, was initially traded from Cumberland to Ottawa, the Grads getting Jackson Alexeev, Curtis Fabbro and Mathieu Talbot in return.
“We got three good players, but we’re sad to see Cam go,” said Cumberland’s Sylvain Favreau, who is also on the move, accepting a job with the Halifax Mooseheads of the QMJHL.
Favreau, helping with the transition in Cumberland, said Hebert asked for the trade, to be closer to home.
“I’m not one to sit on a player or anything like that, and the Hebert family has been very good to us,” said Favreau. “We were respectful of the family’s wishes, but we also wanted to do what’s best for the Cumberland Grads, and it was better for us to do it this way (sending Cameron Hebert’s rights to Ottawa).’
The Grads also lost older brother Grant Hebert to the USHL, where he’ll skate with the Fargo Force this season. Grant Hebert led the CCHL in scoring last year.
“We’re extremely happy for Grant, and we wish all the best for Cam,” said Favreau.
Cameron Hebert, 18, had 10 goals and 12 assists in 54 games with Cumberland last season.
Cross, 19, had 12 goals and 20 assists in 57 games for Ottawa.
Lalonde, who has committed to skate with Robert Morris University in 2018-19 (same school and same year as Grant Hebert), leaves the Colts with 65 goals and 80 assists in 163 game over three seasons.
“I’d like to thank the Colts for giving a 16-year-old an opportunity three seasons ago,” said Lalonde in a press release. “That being said, I’m excited to join the Jr Senators to wrap up my CCHL career.”
• In other Colts’ news, Jeremy McFarlane will forego his last year of junior hockey eligibility to concentrate on his studies.
McFarlane, 19, from Williamstown, has decided to attend St. Francis Xavier University in Antigonish, Nova Scotia in the fall.
“As hard as it is to leave my junior career a year early, I’d like to thank the Colts organization for taking me in the past three seasons growing me as a player and a person,” said McFarlane in a Colts’ press release. “I’m looking forward to the next chapter at St. FX.”
McFarlane spent parts of three seasons with the Colts, scoring 24 goals and adding 40 assists in 145 CCHL games.
He plans on studying business administration at St. FX, and may play Junior B hockey with the Antigonish Bulldogs.
• The Colts have their second annual Cornwall Colts Alumni Golf Fun Day on Wednesday, July 12. It’s an 11 a.m. shotgun start for the tournament, being held at Summerheights. The tourney is in support of the Colts Scholarship Fund.
Anyone wishing to register and play in the tournament can contact David Murphy at the Colts office, at 930-9300 or by email at dmurphy@bensonorg.com.
