Zban Takes First Signs USA Player of the Week Award of Season

Purcellville’s Andrew Zban is the first Signs USA Player of the Week for 2017 after ranking near the top of the Valley League in practically every offensive category.

Zban is leading the league in homers (three), RBIs (11), doubles (four), slugging percentage (1.182) and OPS (1.775), while ranking second in stolen bases (five), third in batting average (.500) and fourth in runs scored (eight).

The Purcellville Cannons have set the pace in the North Division, jumping to a 5-2 start.

Zban’s homers gave the Cannons the lead for good in wins over Winchester (June 3) and Front Royal (June 7).

Signs USA is sponsoring the Valley Baseball League Player of the Week for the second season in 2017.

Honorable Mention:

Alec Aleywine, 1B, New Market Rebels-
 Hit .367 in seven games, leading the Rebels in hits (11) and RBIs (nine).

Joshua Andrews, RP, Front Royal Cardinals- Threw six no-hit relief innings over three appearances. Struck out 11 while walking just one batter.

McClain Bradley, OF, Waynesboro Generals- Led the league in both batting average (.615) and hits (16). Scored six times and stole four bases.

Jay Charleston, 2B/OF, Staunton Braves- Went 11-for-11 on stolen bases attempts in his first seven games of the season. Batted .333 and led the team with seven runs scored.

Kyle Craft, RP, Covington Lumberjacks- Was 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA over two relief appearances that totaled 6.1 innings. Struck out eight while scattering just three hits.

Davis Kirkpatrick, RP, Harrisonburg Turks- Went 1-0 with a save and a perfect 0.00 ERA in 10.1 relief innings. Pitched eight shutout innings of relief in a 14-inning victory over Charlottesville.

Tyler Martin, OF, Strasburg Express- Hit .345 with a team-best 10 hits, adding seven RBIs. Forced extra innings vs. New Market with a three-run homer when the Express were down to their last pitch.

Sean McCracken, SP, Charlottesville Tom Sox- Allowed zero runs in 11 innings of two starts. Finished 1-0 with a 0.00 ERA, eight strikeouts and six hits allowed.

Trent Spikes, SP, Woodstock River Bandits- Led the league in strikeouts (15) over two starts and three total appearances. Went 1-0 with a 1.64 ERA and six hits in 11.0 innings pitched.

Seth Woodard, 3B, Winchester Royals- Led the Royals in batting (.444), hits (12) and RBIs (eight), while scoring seven times.
