The Ottawa Junior Senators found another piece to their roster puzzle by adding forward Daniel Menges for the 2017-2018 season. Menges hails from Novelty, Ohio and toiled for the Gilmour Academy Lancers in the MPHL for the past two seasons. Standing at 6’3, Menges was a top scorer for the Lancers last season tallying 16 points in 17 regular season games while playing significant roles on the Lancers power play and penalty kill units.
Menges has been on the Junior Senators scouting radar for the past two seasons and was one of the top performers at last springs Evaluation Camp where the staff took notice of his size and playmaking abilities. “I think I can bring size and intelligent two-way play to the team,” Menges noted. He added, “I will bring a consistent work ethic and positive attitude to the rink everyday.”
General Manager Martin Dagenais was excited to add a forward with Menges’ skill set. “We are losing lots of firepower up front due to graduation so we made it a priority to bring in some players to fill those roles and Daniel will be given an opportunity to do that.” Dagenais also supported the opinions of his scouting staff on Menges’ strengths. “As an organization, we feel Daniel is a solid player who can contribute in a variety of ways. He moves pucks smartly and protects the puck along the wall. He can kill penalties or distribute pucks on the power play. I think he has huge upside.”
Menges had drawn considerable interest from a number of teams on both sides of the border but ultimately felt that the Ottawa Junior Senators gave him the best possible opportunity to chase his dream of playing hockey at the NCAA Division One level. “I want to be a part of the winning vulture and I feel that Ottawa will be a great place for to develop, It is an organization where hard work and a winning attitude are greatly valued.”
Familiarity with a future Junior Senators teammate should help ease Menges’ transition into his new jersey as former Gilmour Academy defenceman Devon Daniels will once again patrol the Sens blueline this season. The two played together with the Lancers during the 2015-2016 campaign. Menges is thrilled to be joining the Jr. Sens in what should be a special year with the organization set to host the 2018 Fred Page Cup, Eastern Canadian Junior A Championship next May.
