The Michigan Interscholastic Hockey League (MIHL) is proud to announce that there will be two MIHL Student Athlete Scholarship Awards for 2017.  The two recipients are Chad Kreda, Port Huron Northern and Matthew Pelto, De La Salle.

Chad has a 3.84 GPA and is headed to Michigan State University to study Finance.  “I am honored to receive this award and I want to thank my parents for being supportive throughout my educational and hockey career.  My coaches at Port Huron Northern supported me both off and on the ice.  One lesson I learned from them is that in being a student athlete, being a student is the priority.”  Chad also acknowledged his teammates for creating an atmosphere that made coming to the rink six days a week a pleasure!

Matthew carries a 3.9 GPA and plans to major in Business Management at Oakland University in the fall.  In addition to his on-ice awards (2nd Team All State and 1st Team MIHL South) he received this year, he was named All-State Academic!  “It is an honor to be selected for this scholarship and I am very grateful to receive it. Many people have positively impacted my hockey career at De La Salle, first and foremost, my parents for allowing me to participate in a sport I love. I want to thank Coach Staskowski for nominating me for this award and really making my last year of high school hockey one to remember.”

League president Andrew (Andy) C. Weidenbach, President stated, “The MIHL was formed with the stated goals of promoting quality high school hockey, good sportsmanship and player development both athletically and academically.  This award is consistent with those goals and is a continuation of our contribution efforts.  Congratulations to Matthew and Chad for being selected as recipients of this year’s award.”

The MIHL also sponsors the David Mannino Scholarship which is awarded annually during the MIHL Prep Hockey Showcase. The scholarship was named in memory of David Mannino, a 2011 U of D Jesuit graduate. “David’s life exemplified the goals and objectives of the scholarship – he was a student athlete and a young man with great moral character”, explained MIHL President Andy Weidenbach.

Additionally, the MIHL has donated and supported other charities including the Matt Sorisho Fund through Hockey Helping Heroes.
