Picking the Right Goalie Mask

It takes a unique type of individual to willingly want to stop a 6 ounce piece of rubber coming at them at high speeds, but that’s what hockey goaltenders do. And in order to do it safely, they need to be equipped with the proper protective equipment. Yes, goalies need leg pads, a chest protector, a blocker, a trapper, special hockey skates and a larger stick. But arguably the most important piece of equipment to their safety is their mask. Masks are expensive, ranging anywhere from $100 to several hundred dollars, so it’s important to find the right one. Here are some tips on how to pick the right goalie mask:

Don’t go cheap: The mask is not an equipment area where you should be looking to cut corners. Most entry-level masks are created out of polycarbonate, while more advanced masks include Kevlar, carbon fiber and fiberglass to better protect the head. Make sure you purchase the appropriate mask for the level you’re playing at. For instance, an entry-level type of mask is perfectly fine for lower levels of hockey (mini mite, mite), but a better mask should be purchased at higher levels (bantam, midget, etc.) when players are capable of firing harder shots.

Full mask vs. combo mask: Most goalies have gone the one-piece full mask route, but some prefer the helmet-cage combination mask for its comparative better sight lines and lighter weight. Be sure to try on each style of mask to see which one suits you better.

Ensure the right size: The sizing of goalie masks are manufacturer-specific. That is, a size chart from Bauer may not be the same as a size chart from CCM or Reebok. These size charts usually are based on either head circumference or cap sizes. On that note, be sure that you are aware of each equipment maker’s mask sizing chart, as there’s likely some discrepancy between brands.

Goalie masks aren’t exactly a dime a dozen, which is why it’s important to take your time and try out different brands and styles until you can decide on the one that you like best. For more information on selecting the right goalie mask, and for a list of our goalie camp dates, contact us today.
