Amaro Top Offensive Player for the North Jersey Eagles

RIDGEFIELD PARK, N.J. - North Jersey Eagles pitcher Ryan Remo has spent nearly his entire baseball life in the Professional Baseball Instruction organization.
With his dad Jeff installed as one of the longest-serving instructors at PBI, the younger Remo drew attention from numerous Division I programs as an ace on the baseball school’s U-18 summer showcase team.
Remo also spent countless hours training and throwing at the PBI indoor facilities under the watchful eye of his father, who doubled as his son’s head coach at Mahwah High School, and Doug Cinnella, PBI’s founder and Mahwah’s pitching coach.
Now, after wrapping up his freshman year as a right-handed pitcher at Fordham University, Remo has a chance to play with the top-flight North Jersey Eagles in the ACBL and continue his success in the organization.
On a cool weekend night in Ridgefield Park, he did just that.
Ryan Remo was untouchable in the nightcap of a Saturday twinbill at Overpeck Park, recording a seven-inning no-hitter in a 6-0 blanking of Lehigh Valley.
The feat is the first no-no in Remo’s collegiate career and marks the first in the Eagles’ eight-year history. Ironically, that place in team lore was nearly awarded in the first game of the doubleheader to Cory Heitler, who allowed only a solo home run to Zach Kurtz in a complete-game victory.
Remo encountered his biggest jam of the evening in the third inning after conceding a pair of walks with one out. But, with the game still scoreless, shortstop Bobby Shannon assisted on a heads-up fielder’s choice, backhanding a ground ball and flipping to third for a crucial second out. A lazy fly ball to center field allowed Remo to exit the frame unblemished.
The Eagles’ bats awoke an inning later to provide their starter a lead. Tyler Benson laced a lead-off base hit to center off Lehigh Valley starter Tyler Forbes and swiped second for his team-leading 15th stolen base of the summer. A batter later, Mario Fontanella singled home Benson to push North Jersey ahead 1-0.
The Eagles would tag Catz relievers Mike Schwab and Eddie Lehr for five additional runs over the following two innings, but that was more than a locked-in Remo would need.
He rebounded from his third-inning misstep to mow down Lehigh Valley batters into the sixth inning, where second baseman Matt Stalter preserved his teammate’s bid for history. With a man at first on Remo’s third walk, Stalter made a leaping stab at a line drive destined for right field and an across-the-body toss to first for a web-gem double play that ended the frame.
While Overpeck Park fell silent in the seventh and final inning, Ryan Remo continued about his business, recording a fly out to left field and his fourth strikeout of the night for the first two of three heart-pounding put-aways.
After getting ahead in the count 0-2 against Catz shortstop Christian Pack, Remo induced a routine ground ball to third, which Luis Amaro rifled accurately to first to complete the no-hit bid and doubleheader sweep of Lehigh Valley.
As the Eagles mobbed Remo on the mound, the team also breathed a momentarily sigh of relief. North Jersey’s two wins Saturday elevated its record to 13-16-1, placing it one game behind Jersey for the second wild-card spot.
North Jersey will continue the hunt for a playoff spot on Tuesday, July 12, as the Eagles take on the Jersey Pilots at home in a pivotal matchup. Coverage will begin at 7:00 p.m. with Eagles broadcaster Dom Savino on http://mixlr.com/northjerseyeagles/.
