RYAN BARNES NAMED HEAD COACH OF RED WINGS 2006 BIRTH YEAR BRICK TEAM
Former Red Wings Second Round Draft Pick Tabbed to Lead Team for Tournament in Edmonton Next Summer
DETROIT – The Detroit Red Wings 2006 Birth Year Brick Team proudly announces the naming of Ryan Barnes as the Head Coach for the 2016 event held annually in June in Edmonton, Alberta. Barnes has a long involvement in coaching youth hockey after his seven year professional career.
Barnes, 35, was drafted by the Detroit Red Wings in the second round (55th overall) of the 1998 NHL Entry Draft in the midst of playing three seasons in the OHL. A native of Dunville, Ont., Barnes suited up in the Winged Wheel for two games during the 2003-04 season. The winger also played in the state of Michigan during his pro career, including two full seasons for the AHL's Grand Rapids Griffins (2002-04), while finishing up his pro career as part of the Muskegon Fury (2006-07).
“Ryan is someone I have known for a long time and he perfectly fits the coaching profile established for our amateur hockey teams,” said Kris Draper, Assistant to the General Manager, Detroit Red Wings.
“This is a tremendous opportunity and challenge to put together the best local team of 10-year olds and have them compete against the top players from North America," Barnes said. "I have been a part of the Brick Tournament before and it is a fun event for the players and their families. I can’t wait to get the process started.”
The initial Skill Skates for the Detroit Red Wings 2006 Brick Team take place on Saturday, August 29 from 1:45 – 4:45 p.m. at Farmington Hills Ice Arena and on Sunday, August 30 from 10:00 a.m. – 1:00 p.m. at Joe Louis Arena.
