Blake Culley netted a hat trick to lead the Schomberg Cougars over the Midland Flyers, 7-3.
Culley's first goal came 6:13 into the first period. He then added goals at 12:25 into the first and at 18:58 into the first.Midland's 10 penalties came back to haunt it, as the Flyers let up five goals while on the penalty kill.
Schomberg forced Midland goalie Matt Camilleri to work between the pipes, taking 36 shots. The Cougars surpassed their usual scoring output this season. This season, Schomberg averages 3.8 goals per contest. The Cougars could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 28 minutes in penalties during the game.
Schomberg also got points from Kiefer McIntosh, who also finished with one goal and one assist. Schomberg also had goals scored by JP Crescenzi, Matthew Hudgin, and Brandon Yorke, who each put in one. More assists for Schomberg came via John Gage, who had three and Derek Neilly, Chris Smith, Ian Reid, and Nicholas Chaykowsky, who contributed one each.
The Flyers had trouble converting on the power play advantage, managing just one goal on nine chances. Midland could not stay out of the penalty box, as the team accrued 40 minutes in penalties during the game.
The Flyers were helped by Steven Pickard, who registered one goal and one assist. Pickard scored 5:40 into the third period to make the score 5-3 Schomberg. Evan Buehler picked up the assist. Midland additionally got points from Buehler, who also had one goal and two assists to lead the team in points. Midland also got a goal from Neal Burgess as well. In addition, Midland received assists from Jon Goldsworthy, Jarod Bourne, and Jason Stone, who each chipped in one.
Taylor Ewart recorded 27 saves for Schomberg. Midland's Camilleri stopped 29 shots out of the 36 that he faced. The Flyers ran into serious disciplinary problems during the contest, and Daniel Pickering was ejected from the game.
