Michigan Sports Concussion Law

(Effective June 30, 2013)

As of December of 2017 this test must be renewed every 3 years!!!

The sports concussion legislation requires all coaches, employees, volunteers, and other adults involved with a youth athletic activity to complete a concussion awareness on-line training program.

The organizing entity must provide educational materials on the signs/symptoms and consequences of concussions to each youth athlete and their parents/guardians and obtain a signed statement acknowledging receipt of the information for the organizing entity to keep on record.

The law also requires immediate removal of an athlete from physical participation in an athletic activity who is suspected of sustaining a concussion. The student athlete must then receive written clearance from an appropriate health professional before he or she can return to physical activity.

In this case, your team or organization is the organizing entity. MABF solely is the facilitator of organizing teams. You are responsible for placing the boys on a team, choosing a manager, arranging for umpires and making a schedule (both league and tournament games). While you are free to organize and operate your team as you see fit, MABF requires you to comply with the State Law.

Accordingly, each Coach must view the on-line tutorial and obtain a Certificate of completion. All Certificates must be included in your Roster packet you turn into MABF. In addition, the law requires that your parents be made aware of the law and sign a statement acknowledging receipt of the information. The statement your parents must sign is contained on the above website. Each boy must also sign this statement. You are required to keep a record of these signed statements until the boy reaches the age of 18. MABF requires that you certify to us that you have obtained and will keep these records as the law requires. You may also be required to do so
