For the time being, Austin Daae’s plans include another summer of racing at tracks in North Dakota and at his hometown track in Estevan, Saskatchewan.

Come October, he’ll trade his steering wheel for a stick and his tires for skates as a member of the Fayetteville FireAntz. On Wednesday,

Daae — pronounced “doe” — became the first player to commit to play for the Antz who’s not on coach Emery Olauson’s 13-player protected roster.

Daae, 20, was the scoring champion and Most Valuable Player of the Saskatechwan Junior Hockey League in 2013-14. He scored 71 points in 55 games for the Estevan Bruins, and he’s also played at the higher Major Junior level. He was one of 10 players nationwide in contention for the Canadian Junior Hockey League’s Top Forward Award.
