CLEVELAND, Ohio – Five pitches. Three outs. One inning.
For Case Western Reserve baseball player Rob Winemiller, it suddenly added up to a startling new future.
Winemiller, of Twinsburg, strolled to the mound with scouts from 20 Major League Baseball teams watching. He threw five pitches. All were strikes. Four were fastballs humming at either 93 or 94 miles per hour and the fifth was a wicked slider used to strike out a batter on the third pitch.
He recorded the three quick outs on a wet July night last year at the New York Collegiate Baseball League All-Star Game in Geneva, New York.
Winemiller walked off the mound with his days as a Case Western Reserve catcher in his rearview mirror and began looking forward to a potentially bright future as a professional pitcher.
