Groton, CT—The Mystic Schooners used four first inning runs and a 4-4
night by catcher Joe Hudson (Odessa, FL/Notre Dame) to take down the
Keene Swamp Bats of the New England Collegiate Baseball League
(NECBL), 6-2.

Keene sinks to 8-5 on the season, and Mystic improves to 8-3.

Starting the game for the Swamp Bats was Jared Wilson (Cypress,
CA/Cypress College) who was staked to a one-run lead after the top of
the first, in which short stop Alex Chittenden (Indianapolis,
IN/Louisville) drove in Derek Toadvine (Springfield, OH/Kent St.) to
give Keene a 1-0 lead.

But Wilson (0-1) took the loss after giving up four runs in the bottom
of the inning, highlighted by a three-run home run by the catcher
Hudson (three of his four RBI), giving Mystic the 4-1 lead they would
not relinquish. Wilson finished the day with four innings thrown,
giving up five runs (all earned) on five hits, two walks and three
strikeouts.

The three runs were all the staff of Mystic needed, highlighted by the
steady effort of Schooner lefty Alex Norris (Clearwater, FL/FL Gulf
Coast U). Norris (3-0) got the win by throwing five innings of one run
ball (unearned), giving up five hits while striking out one. He did
not walk a batter.

Keene’s relievers found more success on the hill than their starter
had. David Mahoney (Colchester, CT/UCONN) pitched two innings of
one-run ball. T.J Ferguson (Westmoreland, NH/Franklin Pierce) and
Anthony Cervone (Beacon, NY/St. Johns) followed with shutout innings.

But the offense, which was so successful the night before by notching
double-digit hits, were held at bay today with just six hits. Keene’s
Chittenden went 2-4 with the RBI, and Kevin Brown (Northborough,
MA/Bryant U.) hit his second home run of the year, a solo shot to
right field in the seventh which left the score where it finished, at
6-2.

The next Swamp Bat game will be Friday, July 1st, in Danbury, CT
against the Danbury Westerners at 4:00.  It will be the first game of
a double header.
