In a game where neither team could get a cushion, the Fort Erie Meteors escaped with a 4-2 victory over the Buffalo Regals.
Fort Erie gained the winning advantage on a goal by Braden Kavaratzis 4:52 into the third period and hung on until final buzzer.
Kavaratzis was all over the ice for the Meteors, as he tallied two goals and one assist in the win. Kavaratzis scored the first of his two goals at 26 seconds into the first period to make the score 1-0 Fort Erie. Austin Carroll provided the assist. Kavaratzis' next tally made the score 3-2 Fort Erie with 15:08 left in the third period. Carson Johnstone picked up the assist.
Fort Erie's penalty kill excelled, as the Meteors gave up zero goals despite allowing seven power plays.
Fort Erie stifled Buffalo's power play, and did not give up a single goal while down a man. The Regals were unable to stop the Meteors from sending pucks towards the net, and Fort Erie eventually piled up 46 shots on goal. The Meteors' penalty killing units received substantial work throughout the game as Fort Erie finished with 44 penalty minutes.
Fort Erie also got points from Mike Boles, who also racked up one goal and three assists to lead the team in points and Johnstone, who also tallied one goal and one assist. More assists for Fort Erie came via Jared Marino and Sam Quaranta, who contributed one a piece.
Buffalo was helped by Michael Faliero, who registered one goal and one assist. Faliero scored 13:50 into the second period to make the score 2-1 Buffalo. Matt Mahony provided the assist. Buffalo additionally got points from Mahony, who also had one goal and one assist. Other players who recorded assists for Buffalo were Ryan Cox, who had two.
Matt Baker rejected 26 shots on goal for the Meteors. Fort Erie registered zero goals on two power play opportunities. The Regals' Adam Dentico stopped 42 shots out of the 45 that he faced. Buffalo incurred 18 minutes in penalty time with four minors.
