Jay is a former second round pick of the Houston Astros and played in 60 games for Southern Illinois in 2014. He batted .292 with 12 doubles and 19 RBI while finishing fifth in the Frontier League with 28 steals. The 24 year old was drafted in 2008 and in six professional seasons has stolen 147 bases.
He made his pro debut in 2008 playing 55 games for Greeneville (TN) Astros of the rookie level Appalachian League. Right away he showed his base running ability with 14 steals. The next season he was promoted to low-A Lexington (KY) of the South Atlantic League batting .267 with 23 steals over 101 games.
The 2010 season saw another promotion as Jay spent the season with Lancaster of the high-A California League. In 131 games he swiped a career high 54 bases while batting .261, 10 homers and 59 RBI. That fall saw another acknowledgement as Jay was invited to play in the prestigious Arizona Fall League.
In 2011, Jay split his time between Lexington and Lancaster hitting .242 and once again played in the Arizona Fall League.
Jay finished his time in the Houston organization back in Lexington in 2012 batting .255 in 15 games.
His full name is Joseph Edward Austin III. Currently lives in Lithia Springs, GA with his wife Jovelle and daughter Jayla. Enjoys playing X-Box in his spare time.
