Herrera has been an elite hitter in the Atlantic League for several years. The 37-year-old’s rights were acquired from the Long Island Ducks in a trade for the rights to pitcher Daryl Harang. Herrera brings with him a career .325 (532-for-1638) average in the Atlantic League, spanning the past five seasons. He hit .298 in just 43 games with the Ducks late last year, and finished on a tear, batting .590 over an 11-game hitting streak to cap the regular campaign. He has hit over .300 in each of his other four seasons in the league, including an eye-popping .357 for the Newark Bears in 2007, in addition to garnering Atlantic League Championship Series MVP honors that year. He followed that with a .331 average as an encore performance in 2008, and a career high-tying 16 homeruns, spearheading a Bears offense that was arguably the best in league history. The Dominican native reached the majors with the Oakland Athletics for part of the 1995 season, and most of 1996 when he hit .269 at the big league level. He landed in Oakland as part of the deal that sent former Atlantic Leaguer and National Baseball Hall-of-Famer Rickey Henderson to Toronto in 1993.
