South Side native Dan Grunhard will serve as the Slammers’ first hitting coach.  The St. Laurence High School graduate brings his seven years of minor league experience to Silver Cross Field in 2011. Grunhard, who was Joe Girardi’s roommate at Northwestern University, was named All Big Ten in 1985 and Academic All Big Ten in 1984 and 1985.  He set the university’s second highest career batting average. He also had the second highest single season average in school history at .451.  After being drafted by the California Angels in 1985, Grunhard played seven seasons with the Angels and Oakland A’s, spending three full seasons in Triple-A. “Dan is a great addition to the staff,” Slammers Manager Bart Zeller said. “He rounds out our coaching staff with his extensive experience in affiliated baseball.” Dan has been married to Tonnie Grunhard for 15 years and has two daughters, Savannah, 14, and Scarlett, 12. He resides in Covington, Georgia.
