Adrian Martinez was cold coming off the bench, but Martinez warmed up quickly as Martinez stroked a key pinch-hit single in the nine to lead the Sioux City Explorers (31-40) to a 6-4 win over the Gary SouthShore RailCats (31-39) on Tuesday at Lewis _ Clark Park.
With the Sioux City Explorers trailing by two in the ninth inning, Martinez came to the plate and singled, scoring Brandon Newton.
A walk-off two-run home run by Newton gave the Sioux City Explorers the win.
Newton boosted his batting average thanks to a perfect 2-2 day at the plate to pace the Sioux City Explorers. He singled in the third and fifth innings and homered in the eleventh inning.
Ray Serrano had a hot bat for the Sioux City Explorers. Serrano went 2-4, drove in one and scored two runs. He singled in the second inning and homered in the fourth inning.
Chris Bodishbaugh improved to 6-2 on the year by picking up the win for the Sioux City Explorers. He struck out two, walked two and surrendered no hits.
Chris Allen (4-5) took the loss for the Gary SouthShore RailCats. He lasted just 2 1/3 innings, walked none, struck out four, and allowed four runs.
