An RBI single by Shane Kennedy and a two-run double by Steve Marino during the first inning and an RBI double by Francisco Rosario, a two-run single by Aaron Gates, a triple by Kennedy, and a single by Craig Massey in the second inning fueled the Southern Illinois Miners' offense early.

Kenny Towns was hot from the plate for the Schaumburg Boomers. Towns went 3-4. He doubled in the first inning and singled in the sixth and ninth innings.
