In his first season with the Slammers Phil Bates hit .288 with 4 home runs and 31 RBI. Bates signed with the Slammers last fall after finishing up his collegiate career at Georgia Gwinnett College. The versatile outfielder batted .377 with 23 extra base hits his senior year while slugging at a .521 percentile. He drove in 45 runs and scored 75 himself. Bates blazed the base paths, swiping 33 bases. This followed an impressive junior season in which Bates batted .387 with a .500 OBP. He also notched 22 RBIs and scored 56 runs. Bates walked on with the Grizzlies after transferring prior to his junior year. The odds were stacked against the outfielder, as he was fresh off labrum surgery, but the Grizzlies coaching staff says his positive attitude helped him earn a spot on the team. Bates batted .324 with 31 RBIs in two seasons with Reinhardt University prior to transferring. Bates is an outdoorsman, spending much of his free time fishing, hunting and on the golf course.
