Speier, a right-hander, has spent part of four seasons, including the last three with the Colorado Rockies in the Major Leagues. Speier also pitched out of the bullpen in Game 1 of the 2007 World Series against the Boston Red Sox. Last year Speier began the season in the Majors, tossing 5.2 innings in five appearances with Colorado. He spent the bulk of 2009 at Triple-A Colorado Springs, going 2-2 with a 4.70 ERA in 30 games. In 2008, Speier pitched in a career-high 43 Major League games for the Rockies. He finished with a 2-1 record, a 4.06 ERA, and 33 strikeouts in 51 innings that season. Overall Speier is 7-3 in his Major League career with a 3.99 ERA in 90 career games and 99.1 innings pitched with Colorado, all in relief. This will mark Speier’s first appearance in the Atlantic League, but he will be in familiar company with Blue Crabs starter Jarrett Grube. The two pitched together last season at Colorado Springs before Grube signed with Southern Maryland. A veteran of eight professional seasons, Speier signed with Colorado in 2001 and has played his entire career in that organization to this point. He is 26-19 lifetime in the Majors and minors combined with 422 career strikeouts and just 183 walks in 420 career games out of the bullpen. His career ERA sits at 3.52 entering this season.
