Joe Cotton will serve as the pitching and bench coach for the Honkers in 2009. He and field manager Rusty McNamara have a long history together, which began when both played together for five years in the Philadelphia Phillies organization. Cotton was drafted by Philadelphia in 1996, one year before McNamara, and was taken in the Rule 5 draft by Oakland in 2000 where he spent the next two years between AA and AAA. He and McNamara hooked up again in 2003, playing 2 seasons for the Long Island Ducks of the Atlantic League, where they won a league championship in 2004. In all, Cotton compiled an impressive 32-25 record with a 3.31 ERA through his professional career. He appeared in 228 games, mainly as a reliever, striking out 386 over 473 innings pitched. Cotton retired from professional baseball in 2004, and the native of Akron, Ohio, moved to Palm Harbor, Florida, where he works as a private baseball instructor. |
