Matt McPhearson enters his first year with the Grizzlies and seventh as a professional in 2019.
He signed with the New York Yankees prior to the 2018 season, which he spent with the Class-A Charleston (S.C.) Riverdogs, for whom he hit .266 with 10 steals (in 12 attempts) over 33 games. He added a .365 on-base percentage.
McPhearson, 24, was selected by the Arizona Diamondbacks in the fourth round of the 2013 MLB Draft out of Riverdale Baptist High School in Upper Marlboro, Md. He played five seasons in the D-Backs’ system, reaching the Triple-A Reno (Nev.) Aces for three games in 2016. He hit .278 and stole 31 bases (in 42 tries) with the Class A-Adv. Visalia (Calif.) Rawhide in 2017, his last season in Arizona’s system.
Over 318 professional games, McPhearson has 125 steals. He’s been caught 29 times for a career 81 percent success rate. He has never hit a professional home run.
