Nieves gives the Joliet Slammers late push to beat the Southern Illinois Miners, 5-1

Abel Nieves drove in the winning run to give the Joliet Slammers (21-28) the lead in the seventh inning, as the Joliet Slammers hung on to beat the Southern Illinois Miners (29-20) 5-1 on Friday.

With the score tied at one in the seventh inning, Nieves came to the plate and singled, scoring Patrick Norris.

Hector Pellot did his best to jumpstart the offense for the Joliet Slammers, reaching base three times. He scored two runs and had one RBI. He homered in the first inning.

Jim Schult kept contact to a minimum, striking out 10 the Southern Illinois Miners batters. Schult allowed one earned run, four hits and one walk over seven innings.

Shawn Gilblair was effective even in defeat, mowing down six the Joliet Slammers batters and allowing one run.

David Whigham (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just one-third of an inning, walked one, struck out none, and allowed three runs.
