Nick Akins drove in three runs, helping the Joliet Slammers (28-35) to a 9-4 victory over the Florence Freedom (35-28) on Saturday at UCMC Stadium.
He homered in the third inning and singled in the seventh inning.The Florence Freedom had no answer for Lucas Goodgion, who kept runners off the basepaths in his appearance. Goodgion held the Florence Freedom hitless over one inning, allowed no earned runs, walked none and struck out three.
Bobby Joe Tannehill racked up two RBIs on one hit for the Florence Freedom. He homered in the second inning.
Brett Zawacki improved to 4-5 on the year by picking up the win for the Joliet Slammers. He allowed four runs over six innings. He struck out five, walked three and surrendered nine hits.
Kit Carter (0-1) was the game's losing pitcher. He lasted just 3 1/3 innings, walked three, struck out two, and allowed five runs.
