Returning for his second season with the Waves, Buck McCarthy was a key presence in South County due to his offensive and defensive versatility. Splitting time as both a catcher and outfielder, McCarthy hit .247 with three homers and 23 RBI in 35 games. McCarthy also hit .429 with a double and an RBI during the 2014 NECBL Playoffs.

During his three years with the Bryant Bulldogs, McCarthy has had a storied career as a catcher, outfielder, and designated hitter. In 46 games as a junior, McCarthy hit .303 with six homers and 38 RBI. McCarthy was also named the NEC Player of the Week on April 20. His sophomore season was filled with numerous accolades; in addition to hitting .340 with four homers and 20 RBI, McCarthy was named First Team All-Northeast Conference (NEC), Second Team All-ABCA (American Baseball Coaches Association) Northeast DH, and NEC All-Tournament Team.

In his freshman season, McCarthy played with the Stetson Hatters. He appeared in twelve games before transferring to Bryant. During his time at Everett High School in Massachusetts, McCarthy won all-league honors three times.
