Oklahoma Wesleyan University standout Jose Ruiz has been named NAIA baseball Player of the Year, the national office announced on Monday.

Ruiz, a senior from Barquisimeto, Venezuela, was instrumental in the Eagles’ outstanding 2014 campaign and has been recognized for his efforts, after ending the year with eye-popping figures, including a 10-game hitting streak and multi-hit performances in 26-of-66 games.

The outfielder led the NAIA in runs scored (82) and RBIs (91), in addition to being ranked in the top 10 nationally in total bases (2nd; 169), home runs (4th; 15), slugging percentage (5th; .744) and hits (6th; 92).

Earlier this year, Ruiz was named the Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference (MCAC) Player of the Year after leading OKWU to a program record 58 victories this season. He was also selected as the National Christian College Athletic Association (NCCAA) Player of the Year.

He was also named a member of the all-tournament team at this year’s World Series. Ruiz is the first player from Oklahoma Wesleyan to receive the honor.

Ruiz was one of the main standouts in the NAIA 2014 NAIA Baseball All-America first team, which was selected by the NAIA-Baseball Coaches Association (NAIA-BCA) All-America Selection Committee.

Oklahoma Wesleyan, which ended the term with a 58-8 record, was also making it’s first-ever appearance at the Avista-NAIA Baseball World Series.
