The hard throwing lefty only appeared in 3 games for Duke in 2014. The Glendale, RI native posted a 3.86 average in those three starts allowing only one run in three games and striking out three of 11 batters faced. His sophomore year Hayward garnered ACC Academic Honor Roll honors for the second straight season. For the Blue Devils he made six relief appearances on the year posting a 5.79 ERA with three strikeouts. His work earned Hayward a spot on the 2013 Falmouth Commodores roster of the Cape Cod League, making two appearances over the summer. He appeared in three games as a freshman making his collegiate debut Feb. 22 at N.C. Central, throwing an inning out of the bullpen.Hayward was a four-year letter winner at Mount Saint Charles Academy. Led Mount Saint Charles Academy to back-to-back state championships during his sophomore and junior years and named Louisville Slugger All-American as a senior. First team all-state selection as a senior and named team captain and team MVP as a senior. Hayward went 18-1 on the mound during high school career including a 10-0 Junior year with three no-hitters, a 0.47 ERA and a .424 batting average. He also hit .404 for his career to go along with being the Salutatorian of his class and National Honor Society member.
