In his freshman season as a Dirtbag (the nickname of the Long Beach State baseball team), Drew made 12 starts, the second-most of any pitcher on the team, and picked up 41 strikeouts against just 20 walks in 70.0 innings. In high school he had success both from the mound and with bat, and managed to hit .371 for Liberty High School as a senior while posting a sparkling ERA of 1.58. That season was enough to earn the right-handed Californian All-County (East Bay, CA) honors. His numbers were nearly as strong a year earlier as a junior, when he posted a 1.97 ERA and hit .380. Drew has a history of athletic success at in his family, as his mother, Stacey ran track for Long Beach State.
