The Kansas City Monarchs acquired Jake Matthys on June 6, 2021 in a trade that sent shortstop Anibal Sierra to the American Association’s Milwaukee Milkmen. Matthys had been with the Milkmen since 2019, winning an AA title with the franchise in 2020. He is a career American Association pitcher.

In that shortened season, Matthys saw time in 15 games making one start. He put together a 4-2 record with a 6.81 ERA. Prior to that, he spent most of 2019 with the St. Paul Saints, going 8-4 with a 5.42 ERA.

Matthys’ first season out of college was with the Gary SouthShore Railcats in 2017, where he pitched in 20 games to an 0-1 record and 3.86 ERA.

The right-handed reliever pitched at three schools while in college, most notably at Kansas State University, where he won a Big 12 Championship and made it to a Super Regional his freshman year. Matthys was 9-2 with a 2.05 ERA and nine saves that season in 34 appearances.
