A tall right-hander, Farrell has been towering over the competition in the Big Ten and is aiming to do the same for the Gatemen in the West Division of the Cape League.

At the beginning of his sophomore campaign at Northwestern this past spring, Farrell posted an impressive 3.25 ERA and 4-1 record in nine starts, totaling 48 strikeouts against 21 walks and 54 hits in 52.2 innings of work.

As a freshman, he appeared in 11 games (four starts) despite having to battle an illness. His first career win came in two shutout innings of relief against Illinois State.

A graduate of St. Ignatius High School in Ohio, Farrell was an All-Conference and All-Cuyahoga County choice as a senior after striking out 60 in 55 innings of work and earning an 8-2 record. His junior season, he went 3-1 in 23 innings for a Wildcat team that went to the state championship game.

A two-time participant in the USA Baseball Tournament of Stars, Farrell also twice pitched for the St. Louis Cardinals Scout team.

His farther, John, is the current manager of the MLB’s Toronto Blue Jays and was the Boston Red Sox pitching coach from 2007 until 2010. A family deep with baseball talent, Farrell’s brother, Shane, is a pitcher at Marshall, and another brother, Jeremy, is in the Pittsburgh Pirates farm system.

Farrell is planning to major in economics at Northwestern.
