Karl was signed by the Beach Bums on June 5th after five seasons at the NCAA division 1 level. He was named to the ACC All-Academic Honor Roll as a redshirt freshman and junior at Duke University, then transferred to Rutgers for his senior season, as a grad student. Overall in college, he was 3-6 with a 5.76 ERA. During college, he played 2 seasons for the Trenton Generals of the Atlantic Collegiate Baseball League, and a season with the Yarmouth-Dennis Red Sox of the Cape Cod League. ,A 4- year letterwinner at Toms River North HS in NJ, Karl was named the Asbury Park Press Shore Conference Player of the Year, and honorable mention all-State as a senior, going 7-2 with a 1.20 ERA, and was named the Perfect Game BCS Most-Valuable Pitcher
