Wakefield, RI native Matt Murphy will be playing in front of his home state fans again this summer as he was a late addition to the Gulls roster last summer. Murphy just finished his junior year at the University of Rhode Island where he was named Atlantic-10 pitcher of the week three times, working with the Rams pitching staff to shutout opponents three different times. Murphy proved to be a valuable addition to the Gulls last summer, giving up just 1 run in 12 innings while striking out 14 and issuing only 1 walk. Before playing at URI, Murphy spent two seasons at Assumption College where he spent his first season as a shortstop, starting 38 games. As a shortstop he recorded 11 multi-hit games while leading the team with 116 assists and 52 putouts.

As a Rhode Island native, Murphy attended Bishop Hendricken High School. While at Hendricken, Murphy and his teammates won the Rhode Island State Championship in 2012 and 2013.
